Prompt vs context: frequently asked questions
aieducation
Clear answers to the most common questions about prompts, context windows, memory, and what the AI really remembers between turns.
If you've ever wondered why the AI forgot what you told it yesterday or why a longer prompt made answers worse, these FAQs cover the fundamentals.
Is a prompt the same as context?
No. The prompt is the single message you type. Context is the full bundle the app sends to the model — your prompt plus history, retrieved documents, memory, instructions, and system rules.
Does the AI remember our previous chats?
Not on its own. The model is stateless. Any "memory" you see is the app re-sending saved notes as part of the context on every turn.
What is a context window?
It's the maximum amount of text (measured in tokens) the model can read at once. When the stack grows past the window, older or lower-priority content gets dropped or summarized.
Why do longer prompts sometimes make answers worse?
Models pay less attention to the middle of long inputs — a pattern often called "lost in the middle." More text also crowds out room for retrieved evidence.
What is context engineering?
The practice of deciding what to include, exclude, order, and summarize in the stack so the model has exactly what it needs — nothing more.
How do I know what context an app is sending?
Ask the vendor. Trustworthy enterprise tools let you inspect sources, memory, and system instructions. For a buyer's lens, see how to evaluate AI uncertainty handling.
