Inside citations and source attribution in enterprise AI answers

Citations turn AI from a black box into something auditors and users can verify. Here's how source attribution should actually work.

The difference between an AI that leaders trust and one that gets quietly shelved often comes down to a small UI element: the citation under each answer. Done well, source attribution turns generative AI into something an auditor, a clinician, or a customer-service lead can defend.

What a good citation shows

A useful citation includes four things:

  • The document title and version.
  • The specific section or page.
  • A direct link that opens to the exact passage, not the document's front page.
  • The effective date of that source.

Anything less and the user has to go hunting — which means they won't.

Why fake-sounding citations happen

Some systems generate citations after the fact by asking the model to invent plausible-looking references. These can be wrong even when the answer is right, and right-looking even when the answer is wrong. The fix: citations must come from the retrieval step, not from the generator. Only passages actually passed into the prompt should ever appear as sources.

Attribution at the sentence level

For high-stakes domains — healthcare, legal, finance — map each sentence of the answer back to the chunk it drew from. If a sentence has no supporting chunk, flag it or drop it. This is harder than document-level citation but closes the gap where a model combines sources into a claim no single source actually makes.

Handling conflicts

When two retrieved sources disagree, the AI should say so and show both — not pick one silently. "The 2023 policy says X; the 2024 revision says Y" is a better answer than confident X.

What this unlocks

  • Auditability. Every answer has a paper trail.
  • Faster correction. When a wrong answer appears, you can trace it to the exact chunk and fix the source or the chunking.
  • User trust. People believe systems they can check.

Source attribution is a core pillar of our Responsible AI-by-Design Framework.
