What to look for in an AI transcription tool: uncertainty marking, source linking and…

Three capabilities that separate trustworthy AI transcription from fluent guesswork, and how to test them before you buy.
Most transcription tools advertise accuracy percentages. Three less-publicized features tell you more about whether a tool is safe to rely on.
1. Does it mark uncertain words?
A tool that flags low-confidence words lets reviewers focus their time. A tool that presents every word with equal confidence hides its guesses.
How to test: run a noisy or mumbled clip and see whether uncertain passages are marked or smoothed over.
2. Can you jump from any line back to the source?
Timestamps or image regions linked to each line make verification fast. Without them, checking a single quote means scrubbing through the whole file.
How to test: pick five lines at random and time how long it takes to find the matching source.
3. Does it copy exactly or tidy things up?
Some tools remove filler words, fix grammar, or correct spelling. That helps readability but changes the record.
How to test: include a deliberate misspelling or odd phrase and see whether it survives.
A simple evaluation checklist
- Test with your own recordings, not demo files.
- Include names, numbers, and specialist terms.
- Ask where data is stored and whether it is used for training.
- Confirm you can keep the original file.
