AI token costs explained: FAQ for enterprise buyers

What are tokens, why do long answers cost more, and how do you budget for generative AI? Straight answers for leaders evaluating platforms.

Pricing for generative AI confuses most buyers because it isn't priced like software — it's priced by the word. Here are the questions we hear most often.

What is a token?

A token is a chunk of text the model reads or writes — roughly 4 characters or ¾ of a word in English. "Responsible AI" is about 3 tokens. Models bill separately for input (what you send) and output (what they generate).

Why do long answers cost more than long prompts?

Reading is parallel; writing is sequential. The model ingests your prompt in one pass but produces each output token one at a time, so output tokens are usually priced 2–5× higher than input tokens.

How do I estimate monthly cost?

Multiply: (users) × (requests per user per day) × (avg input tokens + avg output tokens × output multiplier) × (price per 1K tokens) × 22 working days. Pilot for two weeks to get real averages before scaling.

Does a bigger model always cost more?

Yes per token, but not always per task. A larger model may answer correctly in one try where a smaller one needs three retries. Measure cost per successful answer, not cost per call.

How do we control runaway spend?

Cap max output length, cache repeated queries, route easy requests to cheaper models, and set per-user quotas. These controls are built into the Silverberry AI Platform.

Where do most teams overspend?

Pasting entire documents into every prompt instead of retrieving the relevant section. Retrieval cuts input tokens dramatically.
