AI model selection: FAQs enterprise leaders actually ask

Straight answers to the questions executives raise when choosing between small, large, and reasoning models for enterprise workloads.

Enterprise leaders ask the same questions when they first look at model choice. Here are the ones we hear most, with direct answers.

Do we need the biggest model available?

No. The biggest model is judgment-rich but slow and expensive. For routing, summarization, and extraction, a small model with modest thinking usually matches it at a fraction of the cost.

What's the difference between a reasoning model and a chat model?

A chat model answers in one pass. A reasoning model writes hidden notes to itself first — more care, more tokens, more latency. Use reasoning when the task has a verifiable right answer; use chat when fluency matters more than deliberation.

Why does the same question cost different amounts on different days?

Usually because effort level changed, context grew, or the model was swapped. Hidden thinking tokens are billed even though you never see them.

How do we stop overspending on reasoning tokens?

Set effort per task class, not globally. Cap max thinking tokens. Log token usage per feature and alert on drift.

Can one model serve the whole company?

Rarely. Most enterprises end up with a tier: a small fast model for high-volume tasks, a mid-tier for drafting, and a reasoning model for decision-grade work.

How often should we re-evaluate?

Quarterly. New model releases regularly make a cheaper tier viable for a task that previously needed the top one.

Who owns model choice internally?

Ideally a central function — often a fractional Chief AI Officer — so each team isn't re-deciding in isolation. For deeper reading, see our AI consulting services.
